As for figures and language, one thing that has always baffled me is that you can be OVERwhelmed you can be UNDERwhelmed but I have never heard of anybody simply being WHELMED. I can only assume that being whelmed is so taken for granted that to mention it would be an offence against the collective intelligence.
I would love to write a report about a cup game between Accrington Stanley and Manchester United in which I state that as both teams took to the Old Trafford pitch they looked decidedly whelmed, but within ten minutes of the kick-off when United scored their third goal it became apparent that the Stanley players were really overwhelmed by the occasion; and that by the lack of celebration from the United players it can be concluded that they were underwhelmed.
I imagine you have either been underwhelmed or overwhelmed by reading this…but I bet you haven’t been whelmed!
